Can Software Engineers Earn More Evaluating AI Than Writing Code?
Evaluating generated code is not simply writing less code for more money. The difficult tasks can involve designing edge cases, locating subtle security weaknesses, assessing maintainability or explaining why a passing test suite is incomplete. Some assignments value deep engineering judgement that comes from maintaining systems, not just producing a function that compiles.
The work behind code evaluation
Comparing compensation demands comparable units. An advertised contractor rate may apply only to approved task time, with separate unpaid onboarding and uncertain utilisation. A salaried engineering role includes stability, benefits and different responsibilities. A five-hour evaluation project at a premium rate is not equivalent to an entire week of engineering income.
Evaluating AI-generated code involves skills that experienced engineers already use: debugging, writing tests, reviewing architecture and anticipating failure. The job may be intellectually interesting, but the pay comparison needs care.
A coding benchmark might ask you to specify a problem, implement a reference solution, identify model mistakes or design tests that distinguish superficially correct answers from robust software. A senior engineer who has shipped systems can often notice maintainability, security and edge-case issues that a narrow programming quiz misses.
Comparing rates on equal terms
Candidates should demonstrate code review and debugging ability through non-proprietary examples. Where an evaluation requires access to internal repositories or customer data, clarify ownership and confidentiality before sharing anything. Your development experience is valuable precisely because it teaches what happens after code is shipped.
Compare an AI-evaluation offer with freelance development using the same assumptions: approved hours, preparation, tooling costs, deadline pressure and whether revisions are paid. The advertised evaluation rate may look better until you account for the time spent creating and checking tasks.
Technical assessments are often hands-on. A clean explanation of a bug, a well-chosen test and a precise fix can matter more than a sprawling portfolio. Do not paste proprietary code from an employer into a recruitment exercise.
What to show an evaluator
- Identify whether the project tests code, systems design or data skills.
- Measure total time per accepted deliverable.
- Use original or open-source samples you are entitled to share.
